February Event
Sand sand sand. It's everywhere! It's all over the place! Normal, ordinary things are turning into sand!
What's going on!
Well, we're here to tell you about it--! Here it is, the big master post for the...
!!February Event!!
All through February 14, until 11:59pm (Eastern time US), the sand just keeps on doing its thing as it has been: encroaching, invading, getting in your sandwiches and stuff... And then...
February 15
→ After the midnight between February 14th and February 15th, characters will find themselves in one of two places:
The Desert City--a City dissolving into sand, a ruined City in the midst of a monstrous desert, with the sand encroaching still further and even the walls beginning to tumble. Things are bad and they're only going to get worse.
Or the Glass City, made of colored glass--a fragile place where everything seems made of stained and painted glass and where nothing seems at all real. It's slippery and breakable too...
Both places look something like the City itself, although perhaps the Desert City is more familiar than the Glass City? And yet the Glass City is the City as it was, but translucent... Hmm... Two places...
→ Characters can wake up in either City on the 15th (more details below)
→ At moonrise on the night of the 15th, characters in the Desert City will have to contend with monsters rising from the sand: things like scorpions and beetles and tarantulas, vultures and buzzards, small sandworms, mummified corpses of those old invaders the Stewards and the Brain Slugs, Tusken Raiders, rabid banthas, and even a Sarlaac or two which open up where they please to swallow the unaware traveler. Watch out! (Feel free to have characters find other desert-type monsters!)
February 16th
→ In response to these monsters and their attacks, the Deities erect a very quick and dirty safe zone out of bits and pieces of the Underground of the Desert City in which characters can live. And it is a safe, if crowded, place, since the monsters can't get past the walls (of course, they might have gotten a monster or two trapped in there in the process--whoops). They will encourage all citizens to take shelter in these buildings, but this is certainly not required. You can hole up anywhere you like and even camp out in the desert.
→ Meanwhile, the Deities will also announce plans for a complete evacuation from the crumbling Desert City. Everyone in the Desert City can escape into the Glass City--if they will please be patient and file the correct paperwork.
→ The Jump Gate near the forest has been converted into a portal from the Desert City into the Glass City. However, to prevent a bottleneck at the gate, characters must register with immigration officials and the evacuation process will take time.
→ Characters are allowed to carry items or objects through the gate with them. These objects will be solid and functional when they arrive in the Glass City but they may be the only functional items the character has for the duration of the event since the items in the Glass City may be glass. Items will be completely restored at the end of the event. You are also welcome to have characters lose things in the evacuation--even up to everything a character owns, if you choose. If you would like a character to avoid this whole situation from the beginning, the character will have to wake up in the Glass City from the start. If you choose to opt out, please have your character wake up in the Glass City.
→ It's a small mercy, but there are no curses in the Desert City.
→ Curses, however, will carry on as usual in the Glass City. And for every curse, it seems like the Glass City gets a little more solid...
February 16 → February 28
→ Survive the encroaching desert! Fight those monsters! Protect your friends! Endure the evacuation wait! Escape to the Glass City!
→ The evacuation isn't the only way out, though! Here's a hint: if your character can get up to a speed of 125mph, your character can break on through to the other side and get out of the Desert City and into the Glass City. Yes, really! But this will only work twice for a character, so use your chances wisely.
→ If your character uses a vehicle to reach 125mph, upon breaking through to the Glass City, the vehicle will dissolve into sand. Your character will arrive without the vehicle and will find a transparent glass version of the vehicle which will not function again until the end of the event.
→ Your character can also go back into the Desert City to rescue his or her friends and allies and family and lovers. But, to do so, he or she must sign a contract stating that for every hour he or she spends in the Desert City, he or she agrees to spend one extra day in the City (this requirement will, of course, be handwaved and has no bearing OOCly on keeping or playing a character; it's just an IC torment).
→ Characters who move from one city to the other will notice that time doesn't work the same in both places. For every one day that passes in the Glass City, two days pass in the Desert City (this will also be handwaved and no one will be keeping careful count of this OOCly, but feel free to play with it).
→ Characters may also notice that the Network functions well for characters who are in the same City (Glass or Desert), but communication across the barrier between the two Cities will be troubled by static, delays, cut-offs, and disconnections. But conversations can be held with some effort.
→ There is also a death exemption associated with this event. That is, characters who die during this event will not become City!dead. However, characters who die in the Desert City cannot resurrect in the Glass City until the end of the event. They will have to stay in the Desert City. And if someone tries to rescue them and pull them out of the Desert City? Their rescuer will be left with a pile of sand and their friend remade somewhere else in the Desert City.
February 29
→ The evacuation will continue until the 29th of February. Feel free to play out adventures and peril in the Desert City (or the Glass City) until then.
→ Meanwhile, in the Glass City, characters are enduring curses, the same as ever. But, for all they endure, it seems that the City has been growing more and more solid and real all along. Hmmm...
→ On the 29th of February, anyone still in the Desert City will be transported in a last general teleportation into the Glass City. The Glass City, though, will now be solid and mended--it is the City as it was before.
On the 29th of February, the City will be restored--and, yes, it is a restoration. Despite all the moving, everything is as it was before and, indeed, it is the same place, despite the "mix-up". The sand will be gone and the glass will solidify into the proper City-like surfaces again. Likewise, all items will be restored and functional (except for those that players choose to have characters lose in the course of the event).
And what, exactly, happened? The Deities won't say (not yet, at least), but it sure looked like something got put in the wrong place and things had to get righted. It's like dimensions got crossed over or something. Something went weird and there were, shall we say, functionality issues. Anyway, after the 29th, it's the same City as always, just turned right side out again and put back together (seems sort of symbolic, all this moving from one place to get back to the same place again... Hmmm...).
We know this is a fairly detailed event and a long post about it, but we hope that the two weeks between the 16th and the 29th will offer up a chance for some exciting adventures. Run around the desert! Rescue each other! Have fun with it!
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here.
And, as always, thank you, POLYchromatic!♥
